Wood Material for the CubePro
This material is compatible with CubePro Duo and CubePro Trio 3D Printers. It is compatible with wood itself and PLA only (supports can be in wood or PLA).
Wood 3D Printing Material can be used in place of real wood in home décor, the workshop and in the art studio. The ability to sand, drill, paint, stain, lacquer and seal provide more versatility that any other 3D print material in the marketplace.
- Is this natural wood?
Wood material available for 3D printing is a composite material containing PLA based soft plastic with fine wood flour.
- What is the composition?
Wood fiber constitutes 30% by weight in the PLA wood composite.
- What are the properties of wood filament?
Our wood material has properties similar to natural wood. In addition to durability, some of its unique material properties are sound insulation, vibration dampening and it also is biodegradable.
- What are some applications of wood filament?
Wood 3D material is great for printing indoor furniture, window and railing profiles, door frames, wall studs, home accessories such as cabinet drawer handles or knobs, toys, architectural profiles, pallets etc. In short, you can print this material for anything you would use natural wood for.
- What is the printed part density of wood 3D material?
Printed part density depends on the geometry of the part and printing mode. Standard mode, solid part provides 0.47 g/cc, which is slightly denser than using PLA or ABS.
- What material is wood compatible with?
Wood is compatible with wood itself and PLA only. You could print a part in wood and print supports in either wood or PLA.
- What is the recommended print resolution for wood?
Wood prints great at 200 microns.
- What kind of finishing can I do on wood prints?
Wood prints can be sanded, stained, lacquered, sealed, branded and painted. Please consult 3D Systems’ Wood Filament Finishing Guide for a walkthrough on what finishing techniques can be used as well as additional information.
- Can I varnish my printed parts?
Of course. Wood printed parts behave like regular wood parts and can take up varnish. We tried gloss, matte and translucent varnishes with results similar to real wood.
- Can I polyseal printed parts?
We have stained printed parts with polyurethane. Stained pens, liquid and other forms of polyurethane finish work well on the printed parts.
- Can I drill printed parts?
Yes. We have drilled and attached screws and other fasteners to our parts to create modular hinges.
- Is it supposed to have a scent of wood?
Yes. The scent of natural wood comes from the wood pulp that is part of the material. The material contains real sawdust that provides the authentic aroma of wood.
- What printers is the Wood Filament Compatible with?
Wood filament is compatible with CubePro Duo and CubePro Trio.
- Is there any special equipment needed to use the Wood filament on the CubePro?
Yes. A CubePro Advanced Material Nozzle is needed to print wood. This is a nozzle with a larger diameter to resist clogging and can be purchased for $99.00 here.
